Close Encounters at Lorne
There was a great turnout for our performance at the Lorne Sculpture Biennale, commissioned by the Biennale and curated by Julie Collins. Hundreds of people crowded onto the swing bridge to view the Toro, Japanese paper lanterns. On the lanterns were written the names of 120 flora and fauna species that have become extinct in Australia in the last 200 years. The lanterns floated down the Erskine River and towards the sea. The small glowing specks really seemed alive, as they twisted and turned in their journey down the river, the lost spirits of lost diversity greeting us, as they were greeted and guided by the viewers back to the afterlife…
